In today’s world, students must prepare themselves for a wide range of college and work opportunities. For our students who want to lead a happy life and enjoy the good things the world has to offer, all of our students will certainly need a quality education. This year I am working with our junior high students as we learn about Computer Programming. Students in my “Coding” class will be writing and creating programs using the Python programming language. Students will also learn Block style programming for Android Phones and Tablets using the online MIT App Inventor system.

In other various courses I am teaching, students will learn a wide range of technology applications such as MS-Word, MS-Excel, hardware and software concepts along with basic video editing and production. Students will be introduced to 3D design and 3D Printing. All students in my classes will have ample opportunity to learn and practice 21st Century Skills throughout the semester and year.

Week 17 (January 4, 2015)

Welcome to the new year.  I hope everyone had a great Christmas Season.

Our first week back was a challenge since just about all 6th graders had never logged into our school's computer network.  After a couple of days, all the kinks were worked out and we can now say our students are ready to begin training.  This week will introduce students to MS-Word as we work on our Social Contract together as a class.  Students will learn some of the basic features of Microsoft Word.  Their first test for me over rules and regulations of the school will be this Friday.

In one of our class discussions last week, I shared all the work and projects laid out for this semester. Below is information from a handout, which was sent home, so all parents are aware of what I have planned.

8th Grade Audio Video spent most of this week in Benchmark Testing.  This week we will be setting up our Newscast Studio with hopes of recording and creating our first newscast.

Stay tuned for great work coming your way.

6th Grade Computer Science
(What your Child will Experience)

This semester, your child is in for many new and exciting learning opportunities.

We will begin the semester with an overview and summary of the Basic Rules, Policies and Procedures of the classroom.  Their knowledge and understanding will be tested or assessed to ensure every student knows what the classroom and school expectations are.

Keyboarding lessons and typing tests will be our weekly Friday routine.  Keyboarding is an essential skill, needed in most jobs were various computer technologies are used daily.  Computer Programming using the Python editor, as well as other programming languages, require knowledge and use of the computer keyboard.

We will use an online curriculum, “EasyTech” at Learning.Com, to learn and master On-Line Safety and Digital Citizenship.  Throughout this week, several class discussions and tests will assure knowledge, understanding and mastery.

Introduction to Computer Programming will be done using the Code.Org website.  This “Hour of Code” initiative, with all its activities, teaches students “Block Style” programming concepts.

Your child will spend a few days at our Learning.Com website to learn Software Fundamentals.  A few days here will help students understand basic things necessary for effective and productive use of computers, keyboards and the mouse.

Students will spend several weeks in Python Programming.  Students will learn programming as all programming is learned.  Students will type in programs to learn and understand what the various programming instructions do.  They will be challenged to add additional program instructions and to take what they learn to write programs of their own.

We will break from programming so students will learn Web Browsing.  Our online EasyTech curriculum will help students learn and understand how to use Web Browsers properly to find information on the Internet quickly and effectively.

Using the online system MIT App Inventor, students will learn to write apps for Android phones and tablets.  Students will spend several weeks in his unit learning to write apps of various kinds.  Once again, students will be challenged to change and modify their apps.  Students will be given opportunities to write apps of their own design.

Your child will conclude the semester learning about Hardware Fundamentals and Internet Usage.  Through a series of online lessons and quizzes at our online EasyTech system, students will gain an understanding of how computers and the Internet work.

It is my goal to spend enough time on each topic to ensure your child leaves this course with knowledge, competency and proficiency in the use of computers and a basic understanding of computer programming.
