In today’s world, students must prepare themselves for a wide range of college and work opportunities. All students want to lead a happy life and enjoy the good things the world has to offer. Our students will certainly be provided a quality education. This year I am working with our junior high students as they learn and master a wide range of 21st Century Skills.

In this year’s “Technology Applications” class, students will learn and master various topics associated with computers and technology.

The Ending of a Great Semester

The 6th Graders in "Technology Applications" have worked hard this semester.  They close it out with a few things they would like you to share with you.

After Thanksgiving break, we took to "Tinkercad" as we created a little something for 3D printing.  After printing, we were able to take our projects home.

While there were many designs from all students, our focus was on Christmas and the holidays ahead.  One student even created and printed a 3D "Hall Pass" for one of our teachers.  Here are a few samples of projects from each class period.

Some students working through their "Graphic Design" module had their "San Antonio Zoo Flyer" evaluated by a  staff member at the San Antonio Zoo.  Here are samples of what they did and the feedback they received.  It is an awesome experience for our students to have their work seen and commented on by professionals.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

History Day (2019)

Thanks to Jarod Cavazos, "History Day" is always a huge success.   The volunteers who come out and share their expertise, provide our students with an opportunity to learn about history above and beyond daily classroom instruction.

My group of 6th Graders had a great time.

Self-Learning Module 2 and Beyond

Last week, Halloween was a big event with many teachers and students dressing in costumes.  Click on the link for your viewing.

In Technology Applications, some students have moved on to new "Self-Learning Modules".  The remaining students will be concluding Module 2 this week,  As a final project in Module 2 (Digital Citizenship), students learned and added new Microsoft Word skills while creating Digital Citizenship Mini-Posters using WordArt and creating Text-Boxes.  Many posters were scattered around the hallways of our school to remind others of Internet Dangers and Safe Practices.

As students create various projects in their different Learning Modules, their work will be posted.

Stay tuned.

6th Graders are Hard at Work

While behind a little, the time has come to share some of what students are creating.

Having completed Module 1 (Microsoft Word and Tables), students learned and are now able to use their Microsoft Word skills to create graphic projects they never imagined they could.  In order to create these Table projects, students had to learn and use the following Graphic and other features of Microsoft Word 2016.

Change Margins
Change Page Orientation
Create a Table
How to add Table Borders
How to add Page Borders
How to Merge Cells
Change Font Style and Font Size
How to Align Text
How to Insert Pictures and Change Picture Size

Many students are on the verge of completing Module 2 (Digital Citizenship) and will be adding to their Graphic Design Skills as they create their Final Projects, take their Post Test and move on to a Self-Learning Module of their choice.  Samp;les of work from these modules will be available soon.

Here are some samples of what the students have created.  There is one sample from each class period.

Social Contracts

In creating Social Contracts, students in class contribute to the Social Norms we will adhere to in the class.  As a result, each class period is different.

Great Students; Great Work

After learning a handful of basic Microsoft Word Skills, students were able to put what they learned to good use.  Needing to display "Terms and Concepts"  associated with Microsoft Word, students chose from a list of 24 terms or concepts and created Mini-Posters for display.  They used this opportunity to demonstrate what they now know about Microsoft Word, Creating a Table, Merging Cells, Changing Font Styles, Aligning Text, Inerting and resizing Pictures, Saving, Printing, Etc.

Here are a handful of samples of what will be displayed around our room this week.

Great work on the Horizon

As students roll into week 5 of the year, 6th Graders are doing a fine job of keeping on top of things.  Over the past 2 weeks, due to various reasons, we have not had much chance or opportunity to complete any significant hands-on work with Microsoft Word.  They have been patient and anxiously awaiting our first graphic design project.

This week, students will learn many of the basic, intermediate and advanced features of the Microsoft Word Program.  Our Class Social Contract will have them learning about Margins, Font Styles, Size and Text Alignment, Tables, Graphic Images and Page Borders.  What they learn this week will be used for their next Graphic Project where they will create a Class Picture Set. In this project will continue learning other features of Microsoft Word.

Samples of their work will be ready for viewing soon.  Stay tuned and thank you for your patience.

Week 1: Off to a Great Start

The 6th graders in Technology Applications are off to a great start. For this first week of school, students were up and running in all 3 of their accounts (Network, Google and Blackboard).

Students were introduced to graphic design as they learned a number of things pertaining to Graphic Images and Google Documents. By the end of the week, two assignments were submitted through Blackboard.

Next week, we will start Module 1 (Microsoft Word and Tables). By the end of this module, students will have completed our "Social Contract" and "Class Picture Set". A final project will have students using what they learned to create 1 of 3 different projects.

Keep an eye out for project samples to be posted in future posts.

The Renewal is Upon Us

After the first week of In-Service, it's great to be back.  The training this week goes a long way towards honing our craft and getting us ready for the new year.  By improving ourselves as teachers, we stand better prepared to move our students to new levels of knowledge and understanding.  I'm looking forward to our second week of training and preparation.

Our Meet the Parents night is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13 (5:00 - 7:00 pm).  I look forward to meeting as many parents as possible.

Almost Time

The new school year is quickly approaching and it won't be long before I start posting student work again.

I have spent the summer making edits, adjustments, and modifications to the Self-Learning Modules students will be using this year.   I added 2 new modules.  One on Self-Improvement to help with the necessary Soft-Skills needed in today's workplace.  Another is a new coding or programming module where students learn Scratch Programming and game creation.

If you wish to preview the Self-Learning Modules for the year, Click Here.

Enjoy the remaining time over the next 2 weeks as we ready ourself for the great year to come.

Up and Running Again

It has been a while since I have been able to post anything.  There was an issue with my blog access back in March and I could not update the blog as I needed to.  Google made some changes and after several attempts to fix the problem, I was finally able to get myself going.  I look forward to posting the kids work again.

Have a great summer and see you all again in August.

Latest from the 6th Grade Technology Applications

Good day to all.  It has been awhile.

The 6th graders have been very busy and hard at work in their various Self-Learning Modules.  Not all learning modules have product oriented activities but for those which do, students do a fantastic job of taking what they learn, know and are able to do and create products of professional level quality.

More will be on display during our "Science and Technology Paret Night" coming up in March.  Let your son or daughter tell you all about their journey through "Technology Applications".
